Pillow talk 101: What is the best sleeping position?

Side, back or stomach? Each sleep position calls for a different kind of pillow, from ergonomic or memory foam to firm or feather. It’s important to find the best pillow for your sleepy head based on how you snooze.

But what is the best way to sleep? Is there a right decision (or left decision!) in determining which side is better to sleep on?

For many of us, deciding which position to sleep in isn’t somewhere we have the final say. We may be able to control the position we start our sleep journey in, but many of us find ourselves in a completely different position upon waking. That said, if you can control which side you sleep on and want to reap the possible benefits of a given side, some to consider include…

Sleeping on your side—right or left—helps to keep your airways open throughout the night. This can result in more restful sleep, and possibly reduce or eliminate snoring. To maximise benefits, most recommendations suggest sleeping on your left side as it better encourages healthy blood flow and keeps pressure off your hard-at-work-while-you-sleep internal organs. Because your stomach is on your left side, your digestive system can work more efficiently when you lay on your left side—go, gravity!

Sleeping on your back helps keep your spine aligned, with many back pain and headache-sufferers finding relief sleeping in this position. Back sleeping is also popular for those with skin concerns, as sleeping with your face in a pillow can cause irritation or acne for some. It also lets nighttime skincare products absorb into your skin and not your pillow! Sleeping on your back keeps airways open for some sleepers but can be uncomfortable for those with more weight in their belly or chest area.

Most reports show that stomach-sleeping is the least popular position for adults. This could be good news, as sleeping on your stomach almost requires you turn your head in a position that puts your spine out of alignment. That said, it’s not completely without possible benefits, and some snorers find that sleeping on their stomach puts a stop to the snoring. If you sleep on your stomach and don’t plan to try a new position, it’s important to invest in the right pillow to prevent added neck strain.

The best sleeping position for you depends on a number of individual factors, including your primary health considerations and concerns. We recommend researching all the reported benefits of each sleeping position to determine which resonate with your needs, while also considering what you personally find most comfortable.
