Bringing new life to an old favourite

Bringing new life to a home can sometimes mean bringing an old favourite back to life. Like STRANDMON, an improved version of the classic MK armchair that IKEA released in 1951. In the first IKEA catalogue, published in 1951, the armchair was featured for its “top of the line quality”. In 2013, 61 years later, we figured that people still want a high back wing chair that provides comfortable seating when relaxing at home, in a place of their own.

The design is so timeless and universal, that the STRANDMON on the 2013 catalogue cover is actually an MK armchair from the ‘50s, belonging to the founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad.

Material

What is foam?

Foam is excellent as upholstery in seating and mattresses since it provides good comfort and can relieve pressure by moulding to the body. Depending on the properties and feel you’re looking for, there are several qualities to choose from, like high-resilience foam and memory foam. The raw material for foam was previously based entirely on virgin fossil materials. But today, together with our suppliers, we’ve begun developing a material that is renewable and recycled.
